Let me talk about the non-controversial conditions that need to be met to raise red grass:

Water quality

Water quality is the most important part. When the water is good and stable, it is the prerequisite for all good grasses.

At the same time, anthocyanins only show red in an acidic environment, so for red grass, it is best to maintain a pH of 6-6.8 in a weakly acidic environment.


Red water plants have a large demand for CO2. In the tank under the same bright light, the CO2 water plants will become more red.


Red aquatic plants have a high demand for fertilizers, of which iron is the most important and needs to be added daily.

But, but be sure not to overdo it!


Compared with green aquatic plants, red aquatic plants are more resistant to low temperature, and when the water temperature is low (20-22 degrees), it is more conducive to red aquatic plants to absorb nutrients for photosynthesis.

Because chlorophyll is easily destroyed at low temperature, the red color of anthocyanin can be fully displayed.


Aquatic plants will be red, mainly caused by anthocyanins, and the role of anthocyanins is closely related to the intensity of the light quality of the lighting and the lighting time.

Stronger light: most of the red grass needs strong light to show a beautiful red.

Longer lighting time: red aquatic plants have less chlorophyll than green aquatic plants, and it takes a longer lighting time to fully perform light and effect and produce enough energy.

Example A

LED red grass

This is a 120*50*50 cylinder. The lights used are: 6 18W LED 5730 rigid strips, the LED lamp beads are white, the color temperature is 6000K, and 6 18W total 108W are used.

In other words, the LED reaches 108W, the wattage is indeed quite fierce! Because the magnitude of the LED wattage cannot be compared with T5 and T8, to achieve the same brightness as shown in the figure above, it must be several hundred watts for T5 or T8. It should be noted that LED is a cold light source, that is, it does not generate heat when irradiated. However, the heat dissipation of the lamp panel is a problem. Students who like DIY should pay attention to it.

Example B

Ordinary lamp tube cultivation of red grass:

T8 lamp panel

Cylinder: 120X50X50

The initial conditions of aquatic plants: 6 brand 35W T8ho, sunset light is not red enough, red grass a little red, pink palace green.

Then use 4 T8 tubes , add a common blue tube , and a common red tube to color, so that the cylinder body looks cold light.

Result: A week later, the evening glow turned red, the red grass was completely red, and the pink palace turned red.

Let the red grass color, mainly because the blue light plays a decisive role, the red tube is just to prevent the cylinder from emitting cold light, and the white is to reduce the color cast. The proposal of the lamp matching scheme: 2-4 white light, 1 blue, 1 red, so that it looks white and will not affect viewing. If the lamp tube is not enough, it is recommended to 1 blue, and the rest are all white.

PS. If you have a lamp stand or lamp panel and want to grow red grass, you can replace it with ordinary lamps. Professional lamp stands and lamp panels can be directly connected to ordinary lamps.

X Lamp Tube Cultivation of Red Grass:

Lamp: T5 lamp panel 6 tubes, original three white three blue six tubes, white lamp color temperature 10000K.

Four days after the lamp was replaced, the green growth was normal, and a large number of air roots and side buds were emitted from the green palace.

↑The mini red sun continues to shrink the top of the leaf, getting longer and smaller, and there are signs of withering black. The mini red butterfly and the blood red palace are not in good condition, only the red umbrella is taller than before, and the color is also redder.

5. Except the rotten leaves of Mini Red Sun and Mini Red Butterfly are removed from the tank, all other red grasses return to their normal colors, and the new leaves turn to beautiful red.

Thoughts and conclusions

1. From a practical point of view, if the combination of X's tubes is not good, it is not as good as the original tube combination of H-Tube matching is very important.

2. Both the photosynthetic star and the aquatic star are red light tubes. In practice, the red photosynthetic star and water cluster star are suitable for green grass but not for red grass. If you want red grass to develop color, you must match blue tube and yellow tube (840 tube).


Instance D :865+840 Red grass

There is another point of view, directly on 865+840, you can also grow red grass. So, how do you understand 865 and 840? Very simple, 865 is a lamp with a color temperature of 6500K, which emits white light; 840 is a lamp with a color temperature of 4000K, which emits a pale yellow light. Among them, T5 and T8 both have 865 and 840 tubes, the same length, the wattage of T5 is higher than that of T8, and T8 is cheaper. For the brand, ordinary brands are fine.

This kind of lamp matching method is also the most respected solution for growing red grass. It should be noted that the T8 lamp has poor light penetration and the cylinder depth cannot exceed 50cm.
